SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A day after helping guide ETSU to a comeback win and earning medalist honors at the Southern Conference Championship, Mats Ege (Kristiansand, Norway) was named the league’s Student-Athlete of the Week, which was announced on Wednesday.
Ege posted a career 54-hole low of 14-under-par 202, which also helped guide the Buccaneers to a sweep as ETSU rallied from 11 shots down on the back nine in Tuesday’s final round of the SoCon Championship to register its third straight team title at Reynolds Lake Oconee in Greensboro, Ga. Ege, who posted six birdies on the back nine in the final round, became the fourth straight Buccaneer to earn medalist honors at the SoCon Championship, marking the first time ETSU has accomplished the feat since 1979-82. With Ege’s win, the Bucs have now won 18 individual titles, while the team made it 23 SoCon crowns.
Ege posted scores below par in each round as he started with a 6-under 66 in the opener and finished with back-to-back rounds of 4-under 68 to win by four shots over teammate Matty Dodd-Berry, resulting in the first time ETSU went one-two on the player leaderboard since 1996 when Garrett Willis won and David Christensen finished runner-up.
Ege led the field with 21 birdies over the 54-hole tournament, while he also paced the group in par-5 scoring (-11) and was second in par-4 scoring (-4). To with the wins yesterday, Ege was also named to the 2023 Palmer Cup for Team International.
Ege, a redshirt sophomore, is majoring in management and has a grade point average of 3.353.
ETSU earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Regional, which will be announced Wednesday, May 3 at 1 p.m. on the Golf Channel. The NCAA Regional will be held May 15-17.
