Lady Bulldogs lose heartbreaker to University High

JOHNSON CITY – The Hampton Lady Bulldogs traveled to Johnson City on Wednesday evening to take on University High. Hampton fell behind 4-0 at the end of two but rallied in the sixth, scoring five runs to tie the game at 9-9. The Lady Bulldogs would take a two-run lead in the top of the seventh only to give up three runs in the bottom of the inning to lose 12-11 and give University High its first victory.
Ryleigh Nickles would lead off the third with a single and score off a double by Maleah Scalf, who would also score, leaving Hampton down by two, 4-2. UH would bounce back in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs off a double by Kathryn Joyner to extend the lead back to four. 6-2.
In the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs would be held scoreless but UH would add three runs extending the lead to 9-2. The lady Bulldogs would rally in the top of the fifth to score two runs off a hit by Olivia Sarrett to close the gap, 9-4. In the top of the sixth, Nickles would lead off with a single, Scalf would reach on an error and Briley Davis would hit a triple, scoring Nickles and Sarrett. Hampton would score five runs to tie the score at nine. UH would be held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. Scalf led off the top of the seventh with a single, Rachel Fair would double and both would score on a double by Lacey Smith giving the Lady Bulldogs an 11-9 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Joyner would lead off with a walk, Peyton Thompson would get on base, and Emma Chandley would single and score Joyner. Reece Williams would hit a game-winning double to score Thompson and Chandley to lead UH to a come-from-behind 12-11 victory.
University High is 1-3 in the conference and 1-4 overall and Hampton drops to 0-4 in the conference and 1-7 overall.
