The majority of people in the U.S. don’t grow their own food, but instead buy from supermarkets; also, most children have no idea where their food comes from, let alone how to grow plants from seeds. With this in mind, the Elizabethton-Carter County Public Library is now offering free packages of seeds to everyone in the community through our new “Seed Library.” The Seed Library has something for everybody regardless of gardening experience, from herbs and vegetables to flowers of all varieties. Each individual can pick up three seed packets per week throughout the planting season. And since many of us buy our seeds from commercial producers or buy plants already started, and seed saving has become an almost lost skill, once your garden blooms, you’re encouraged to harvest seeds from healthy plants and bring them back to the Seed Library. Through the time-honored tradition of seed saving, we celebrate biodiversity and foster community resilience, self-reliance and a culture of sharing.
So now you can come by the library not just for all the information you need to have a successful and beautiful garden this season, but for the seeds themselves! Happy planting!
