Bucs fall to UNC Asheville for first time since 2017
ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Despite finishing with more hits and fewer errors on Tuesday, ETSU baseball saw a nine-game winning streak against UNC Asheville come to an end, as the Bucs stumbled in a 10-6 loss to the Bulldogs at Greenwood Field in Asheville.
UNC Asheville (13-7) took advantage of some early missed opportunities by the Bucs (10-9), who allowed four unearned runs in the opening frame and stranded the bases loaded in the first and second innings. ETSU rallied with a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh to cut into the deficit, but stranded runners in scoring position and could not complete the comeback.
Offensively, the Bucs finished with 12 hits, including multi-hit days from Tommy Barth (Brecksville, Ohio), Garett Wallace (Sanford, Fla.) and Cameron Sisneros (Littleton, Colo.). Wallace had a solo homer, while Sisneros finished with a double. Joining Sisneros with two-base hits were Ryan McCarthy (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Ryan Enos (Oriskany, N.Y.).
Fourteen pitchers appeared in today’s midweek contest — six for the Bucs and eight for the Bulldogs. ETSU was led by junior Walker Trusley (Knoxville, Tenn.) and former Dobyns-Bennett standout Jackson McDavid (Kingsport, Tenn.) with scoreless frames in the final two innings.
The Bulldogs earn their first win over the Bucs since 2017 and the first at home since 2016. Today also marks UNC Asheville’s first win over ETSU in the Joe Pennucci era, as Pennucci’s Bucs had previously won nine straight without a loss.
