At Roan Mountain we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care is a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

March 18
Roan Mountain 2023 Spring Hike (Sold Out) – 10 a.m. – noon. Meet at Visitor Center Parking Lot. Price is $0/attendee, $10/donation (not attending), $10/attendee + $10 donation, $20 donation (not attending), $20/attendee + $20 donation. Register for the event. Spring has arrived and with it comes the annual views of active wildlife, wildflowers, and much better weather for hiking! Join Roan Mountain State Park at the Visitor Center from 10 a.m. – noon for a wonderful spring hike along the Moonshine Run Trail. After meeting at the Visitor Center Parking Lot, guests will follow the park ranger to the trail head parking lot by the park cabins area for a 1.2 mile hike along the gorgeous Doe River while enjoying some of our early spring wildflowers. This hike is limited to 20 participants with no cost, but donations to our park will help with current trail planning and construction.
Hikers are encouraged to bring cameras, water, and sturdy hiking shoes. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

March 25
Tomahawk Toss – 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Price is $5 and register for the event. Learn to throw a tomahawk! Join Ranger Holland as we have fun learning a popular frontier pastime.
Tomahawks provided. No previous Tomahawk-throwing experience is required to enjoy this fun program. Meet at Shed #3.

March 26
Intro to Fiber Arts: Drop Spindle – 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Meet at the Conference Center. Price is $40 and register for the event. Learn the basics of spinning yarn using a drop spindle! The drop spindle has been used for centuries to make yarn and pre-dates the modern spinning wheel. Learning to hand spin is a great introduction to fiber arts. We’ll be making single-ply yarn using the park and draft method.
Each participant will receive a drop spindle and 4 ounces of wool roving to take home.

Wild Edibles Woodland Stroll – 2 p.m. – Price $5/ages 12 and under, $8/person. Register for the event. Join Ranger Holland for a woodland stroll as we learn about wild edibles in the forest. This program involves light to moderate hiking and will be an interactive learning experience.
We will meet at the park headquarters prior to going to the program area.

Culture & Coffee: The Scots-Irish in Appalachia — 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Conference Center. Price is $0/person, $5/person + $5 donation. Register for the event. While many in our region claim Scots-Irish heritage and generally acknowledge the role the Scots Irish played in the settlement and cultural development of the Southern Appalachian region, this presentation will provide a deeper understanding of who the Scots Irish were, where they came from, why they came, how they got here, and how they left their mark on our region.
About the Presenter: Jane MacMorran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University where she serves as Director of the Appalachian, Scottish, and Irish Studies Program. She is a former United States National Scottish Fiddling Champion and serves as a judge for Scottish fiddle competitions across the U.S. Jane earned her PhD from the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) in 2018.
Coffee & Culture is a new speaker series at Roan Mountain State Park in 2023. Each engagement features a presentation from a subject matter expert on a different topic, and takes place at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center. Coffee and light refreshments are provided. The series is free, although donations are appreciated and will be used to fund refreshments.
