The Happy Valley Lady Warriors played the West Greene Buffaloes in the consolation game of the District 1-2A tournament Monday night. It was a defensive struggle that the Lady Warriors led the majority of, but unfortunately couldn’t close the deal in the final minutes.
Kadie Bailey would get things going for the Lady Warriors, hitting a three-pointer to push her team to a first-period lead at 8-5. Points would continue to come at a premium for both teams in the second period. Mailey Guy would get a stick back late to help push the Lady Warriors to a slim one-point lead going into the break.
The second half would see the Lady Warriors push their lead to 24-20 after a couple of free throws by Bailey and Marcida Moore, but West Greene would respond with a 6-2 run after a Maddie Bryant three-pointer to knot the game at 26 all. Happy Valley would respond and retake the lead after a three-pointer by Bailey also to see West Greene Launch another three-pointer to make it 30-29 Buffaloes advantage. Happy Valley would hold for one final in the third period and hit, as Moore would hit a running, twisting layup in the paint to make it a 31-30 Warrior lead going into the final period.
The game would stay that way until the 5:41 mark of the fourth but a short jumper by Lady Buff Maddie Bryant would give West Greene the slim one-point advantage, 32-31. West Greene would extend the lead to five after a couple of free throws and a short jumper off a loose ball. Mailey Guy would get a layup and cut the West Greene lead to 36-33 with just 3:19 left in the game, and then Moore would hit a floater to make it a one-point game once again. With just 1:11 left in the game, Lady Buff Maddie Bryant would hit a baseline three-pointer off a deflection that would leave the Warrior faithful scratching their heads wondering how that shot went in and the Lady Buffs would be able to hit their free-throws and a Kadie Bailey desperation three-pointer would rim out in the closing seconds to give West Greene the five-point win.
The Warriors were led by Kadie Bailey with 14 points, while Marcida Moore would chip in 12 on the evening. Post-game, the Lady Warriors did pick up some hardware as Kadie Bailey was named All-Conference and All-Tournament, Marcida Moore was also named All-Conference and Defensive Player of the Year, in addition, Mailey Guy was named All-Conference. The Lady Warriors will travel to Gatlinburg-Pittman Friday night to play the Lady Highlanders in the first round of the Regional Tournament.
