KNOXVILLE — Players from the Elizabethton Jr. Cyclones girl’s Jr. Cadet league took time to step away from all their hard work in practice and games to take a road trip to Knoxville this past weekend, where they visited the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and then attended the Tennessee-Vanderbilt women’s basketball game won by the Lady Vols.
The league just began this season and competes in the Carter County girl’s league against teams from Happy Valley, Cloudland, and Hampton, as well as inter-league contests.
There are five teams that make up the Jr. Cadet league for ages six to nine and there is also a Cadet league for older girls.
Developed for the purpose of providing opportunities for young girls to improve their skills while growing a love for the game of basketball was the primary reason the league was formed with hopes that a large group of these girls would take what they learned to middle school and then high school level.
There are also teams for boys to participate on as well in the league.
Everyone had a great time seeing the history of women’s basketball, shooting some hoops, and taking in a pizza party at the facility. The Lady Vols closed out the fun day by whipping up on the Lady Commodores of Vanderbilt.
League games are played on Friday night and Saturday at various locations as the regular season begins to wind down and tournament play is on the horizon.
