The Hampton Lady Bulldogs showed how far they have progressed in the last two seasons on Thursday night with a convincing 74-44 win over Cosby in the finale of the Chick-Fil-A Classic tournament played at Van Huss / White gymnasium.
“The girls have really figured out what we want to do on defense,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Brandon Carpenter said. “This same bunch was close to 24-25 wins last season, and they work hard. They come in every day and put in the work. Ryleigh Nickles had a big game off the bench. She hit some threes and just gave a great effort.”
Junior Macy Henry was a force defensively and on the boards with 21 points and seven rebounds and the Lady ‘Dogs (12-0 overall) remained undefeated going into the district portion of the 2022-23 schedule.
Hampton took a 13-7 first period lead and extended to a 36-16 halftime advantage with post Taylor Berry leading the way with 14 first half points. Berry finished with 17 points on the night. Senior point guard Madison McClain scored just two points on the night but ran the offense with efficiency and Riley McClain made her return to the court after a knee injury stalled the start of her season and she was greeted with loud applause.
The Lady ‘Dogs forced 23 turnovers on the Lady Eagles and turned a good many of those into points as their full court pressure seemed to make Cosby very uneasy bringing the ball up the court.
Hampton led 57-32 going into the final period and allowed Carpenter to use his bench for the majority of the period. Shylee Shelton led the Eagles with 14 points while Kinley Coggins added 13 points.
Hampton goes on the road to South Greene on January 3 and Happy Valley on January 6 before opening district play with a match with University High on January 10.
