The sound of leather popping the nylon netting can only mean one thing for local basketball enthusiasts as another high school season is just around the corner and teams are getting in final preparations as several teams took to the hardwood this week to go against someone other than themselves.
Conference tipoffs were played at Elizabethton High School on Tuesday with girls taking the court and on Thursday the boys took to the court as teams from the Upper Lakes conference took on schools from the Big 5 conference in girls’ action and the six teams in the Upper Lakes Conference divided up in boys action.
Also, on Thursday evening at Hampton, there was more basketball as the Watauga Valley Conference teams were able to get in some time on the floor as well.
Things ramp up during the upcoming week as basketball starts to hit its stride in the midst of several local football teams playing for a shot at the state football championships in December. Some of the local teams have several players still taking part in gridiron play so the early season might be a bit challenging.
Many middle schools have already begun while youth leagues are preparing to tip off their season as well.
