When the Seymour coaching staff reviews the game film from Thursday night’s Region 1 4-A contest with Elizabethton, possibly the only positive thing they will see is that out of 13 fumbled snaps, they were able to recover each one.
Other than that, it may be a short film session as Elizabethton outright claimed the #2 seed in Region 1 Class 4A and will host either Knox Carter or Knox Gibbs next Friday night in the first round of the 2022 TSSAA Blue Cross Football Championship playoffs on the heels of a 62-0 whipping of the visiting Eagles.
The game was over by the half as Elizabethton put 55 points on the scoreboard in the first 24 minutes of action as 13 seniors were recognized for their contributions over the last four years as a Cyclone.
Five different Cyclones scored in the half as Cade Russell had three scores including scoring passes of 13 and six yards from quarterback Dalton Mitchell and a two-yard run with 1:47 left before the half.
Nate Stephens added a pair of scoring runs as well covering 27 and one yards in the opening half rout. Jeriah Griffin added a nine-yard scoring reception while Teddy Orton hauled in a 36-yard scoring toss from Mitchell as well.
The other score in the half came from the defense as defensive back Luke Whaley stepped in front of a Josh Nivens pass attempt and took the interception 15 yards on a pick-six.
Caleb Campbell added four point-after attempts with senior kicker Mason Williams adding one and senior kicker Colin Nidiffer collecting two.
The final Cyclone score of the game came in the fourth quarter when quarterback Gib Maupin connected with Eli Blevins on a 27-yard scoring toss. Cole Kent added the point after to make up the final 62-0 score.
Elizabethton racked up 439 total yards of offense while holding Seymour to negative 14 yards of offense. The Cyclones were 13-of-21 through the air for 209 yards and had 19 rushes for 232 yards.
Mitchell completed 8-of-10 passes for 142 yards and four scores while Maupin was 4-of-9 for 65 yards and a score. Stephens had five carries for 126 yards and two scores as the senior back went over 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Russell added seven carries for 70 yards and a score while Jaiden (J-Bird) Wallin had four carries for 45 yards.
Defensively for the Cyclones, Orton, Eli Williams, and Jon Siepert recorded a sack of Eagle quarterbacks. Seymour had 13 fumbles without a turnover and punted eight times for 27 yards. Elizabethton didn’t punt in the contest.
Game time for next week’s opening round of playoffs will be 7 pm at Citizens Bank Stadium.
