‘Betsy 10u team claims baseball championship in Atlanta

While everyone’s mind is focused on football season, there are still a few other sports going on within the local community. One of those involves the Elizabethton 10u Cyclone baseball team who spent the weekend in Atlanta playing for a baseball championship.
The Cyclones went 2-0-1 in the tournament to win the championship led by Adam Shelby who was up at the plate at the right time coming through for his team.
“He was most definitely our MVP,” said Cyclone 10U head coach Curtis Birdsong. “These kids played with a lot of heart and having to play back-to-back-to-back. We had a big three-run top of the fifth in the championship to complete the comeback and claim the championship.”
In the first game, the Cyclones took on the Meridian Panthers and claimed a 10-7 victory. In the contest, ‘Betsy had a big eight-run second inning as Carter Birdsong and Cole Berry had back-to-back one-hop doubles to the fence. Also contributing to the win were Tucker Hess, Mason Martin, Elisha Diaz, and Hayden Isaacs whom each added a base knock.
The second game of the tournament resulted in a tie as the Cyclones and Georgia Dream Chasers finished the contest all even at six runs apiece. ‘Betsy took a two-run lead early but the Dream Chasers wouldn’t go away the entire contest and eventually caught the Cyclones in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Aaron Shelby, Cole Berry, Adam Shelby, and Elisha Diaz each collected a hit for ‘Betsy.
“We came up with some timely hits by some gritty kids,” Birdsong said of the contest.
In the championship tilt, the Cyclones put it all on the line and came out on top by a 6-5 score over the Chastain Legends.
Aaron Shelby set the tone for the game on the mound by striking out six and only allowing four hits. Berry closed out the game by throwing the gas and striking out the side.
Leading the way offensively for ‘Betsy was Mason Martin with two hits while Birdsong, Easton Snyder, and Adam Shelby all contributed with one hit apiece.
