BRISTOL – While finding a dynamic offense over the last three games of the season and the opening round of the TSSAA District 1A playoff, the Elizabethton Lady Cyclones ran into a hot Tennessee High team that shut the door on the team moving forward.
Senior forward Riley Miller scored a three-goal hat trick as the Lady Vikings advanced to the district final with a 4-nil shutout of the Cyclones on Tuesday evening at Stone Castle.
“I think it has been a great season,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “We didn’t match their intensity in this match, but overall I think it was a great season. These girls built relationships that they will take into the coming years. I think they learned a great deal about playing as a team and it’s something they will continue to build on. The good thing is that they are young.”
Sophomore Zoe Coble opened the scoring in the fourth minute blasting a low hard shot across the face of the goal frame that EHS goalkeeper Morgan Heaton dove to stop but it missed her fingertips by a narrow margin and settled into the net for a 1-nil THS lead.
“I feel for the seniors,” Meier said. “They really set a good example for the rest of the girls and Morgan has played her heart out for four years here. She left it all on the field.”
In the 24th minute the Viking struck for Miller’s first goal and Tennessee High left the pitch at the half with a two-goal advantage. THS outshot the Cyclones by an 8-2 margin in the half as the Vikings controlled possession for much of the match, keeping goal scorers Kaiya Simmons, Camdyn Garland and Izzy Lewis in check.
Miller scored in the second minute of the second half and that goal took a lot of the wind out of the Cyclones sails and the Viking senior struck the fatal blow in the 47th minute for a 4-nil tally. That last goal seemed to take all the life out of the Cyclones – and though they didn’t quit fighting, it seemed it was a futile exercise as EHS (7-9-2 overall, 4-3 conference) finished with just three shots on goal for the match.
“The future looks good for us,” Meier said. “We have something like 13 freshmen joining us next year from TA Dugger and the girls that are already here have some experience to draw on and that will help us moving forward.”
