James L. “Speck” Smith, 83, Hampton, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was born September 26, 1939 in Carter County to the late John H. and Ruby Hazel Shepherd Smith.
Speck was retired as a Millwright with the Brunswick Bowling Co. He loved to hunt and fish and had won several awards during his years. He was a member of Local 1544 in Nashville, Tenn., and a member of Union Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Peggy Peters and Gaynell Arrowood, and one brother, Paul Howard Smith.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Pansy Dugger Smith; a son, Paul Wayne (Karen) Oliver, Hampton; a step-daughter, Pamela (Michael) Koshio, Denver, Colo.; grandsons, Brandon (Lea Ann) Oliver, Cade Koshio and Kai Koshio; a granddaughter, Megan Scalf; several great-grandchildren; one niece, Kitty Peters; and one nephew, Brian Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 10, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor James Bentley officiating. Music will be provided by Joel Crisp. Interment will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Brandon Oliver, Cade Koshio, Kai Koshio, Michael Koshio, Adam Dugger, Andrew Dugger and Danny Burgess. The family would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and nurses of Sycamore Shoals Hospital for the excellent care he received.
