Hampton held Happy Valley to just 55 yards of total offense in taking a 49-0 conference victory on Friday night at J.C. Campbell Stadium.
The Bulldogs took a 30-0 halftime lead as senior tailback Levi Lunsford rushed for all of his game-high 161 yards in the first half with a touchdown and a pair of two-point runs and junior quarterback Dylan Trivett had three scoring passes and a two-point pass in the first half.
“Levi is a kid that works so hard for everything he gets,” Bulldogs head coach Michael Lunsford said. “He works real hard and it has paid off for him.”
Trivett finished the game 6-for-9 for 91 yards and three touchdown throws.
“Trivett’s a kid that just needs to keep getting his reps and he has made the most of his opportunity to play,” Lunsford said. “We are just super proud of him and all these guys.”
The ‘Dogs forced a Warrior punt on their first drive and took possession at the 35-yard line. From there Lunsford carried four consecutive times completing the drive with a 43-yard touchdown run. Lunsford added the deuce for an 8-0 Hampton lead.
The Warriors (1-4 overall, 0-2 conference) best drive came next as they started at their own 25 and drove to the Hampton 19 before turning the ball over on downs. Hampton then went on a five-play, 81-yard drive that ended with a 23-yard scoring pass from Trivett to Chance Point and Lunsford ran in the deuce for a 16-0 advantage.
Still in the second period Hampton (5-0, 1-0 conference) forced a three-and-out for HV but fumbled the ball to the Warriors. They could do nothing and a punt from Reagan Ensor went just nine yards with Hampton taking possession on the 35-yard line.
The ‘Dogs finished the half with Trivett throwing touchdown passes to Brody Hicks for five yards and a 34-yard strike to Point and when asked how good his communication with his receivers was Trivett said, “I’ve played with those guys since I was in sixth grade so I know what they are going to do and they know what I’m going to do. Practicing and going hard every day shows up on game day. Play the way you practice.”
Hampton took the ball to start the second half and drove 62 yards on five plays with Dominique Burleson scoring on a 19-yard scamper with Point adding the point after kick. In the fourth quarter and a running clock, Grayson Young intercepted a pass and raced 45 yards for the score that made it a 42-0 contest.
Hampton got its last score on a 43-yard race down the visitor’s sideline for freshman Peyton Townsend.
