MARYVILLE – Maryville first-year quarterback Bryson Rollins made quite a debut for the Scots in Saturday’s football opener against Berry.
Rollins totaled 266 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, with two of those coming through the air and one on the ground. For those efforts, the Elizabethton native earned USA South Rookie of the Week honor.
Rollins earned the start at quarterback as a true freshman and did not disappoint the 2,350 fans in attendance. He completed 15-of-29 passing for 228 yards, hitting on fourth-quarter touchdown tosses of 18 yards to Steph Carter Jr., and 30 yards to Kevon Samuels.
Maryville’s signal-caller also got the scoring started for the Scots with a 2-yard TD scamper in the first quarter. The Maryville offense with Rollins at the helm possessed the ball for 38:30 of Saturday’s 60-minute contest.
Maryville is back in action Saturday night at Centre (1-0). The Colonels rallied to defeat Hanover 31-29 in their 2022 opener. Kickoff from Danville (Ky.) High School is at 7 o’clock.
