Can you believe that the first day of August is almost here? In just a few days, schools will open and students will be headed back to the classroom.
Summer is quickly drawing to a close. Soon, the days will be getting shorter. It will be sweater weather in the morning and evenings.
Football season is almost here. The Appalachian Fair is planning for opening day. Soon the katydids will be singing and garden season will be over.
Seems like just yesterday, the summer break just started, the Fourth of July just passed, families were headed out to the beach. But, here it is, summer break is almost over.
Yes, isn’t that the way of life. Time goes quickly. For some, it will be the first day of kindergarten and first grade. For older parents, they cannot believe their “babies” are entering the final year of high school or are off to college.
Where does the time go?
Where did summer go?
There are a handful of weeks until Labor Day, the signal to summer’s end and shorter days and longer nights.
Parents should do as much as they can to spend a little time with children during what is left of summer vacation. Go on a picnic, take in a ballgame, go on a road trip, or stay up a little later and watch a weekend movie with the kids. Saturday evening, take the kids downtown to the car show. Get a pizza and an ice cream cone. Go for a bike ride on the Tweetsie Trail. Take one last dip in the pool.
Because it will happen in the proverbial wink of an eye.
Summer will be gone.
The children will be grown and gone.
Yes, summer will soon be in the rearview mirror.
Perhaps the best sign that summer is winding down is that high school kids have begun practice for the upcoming football season.
Enjoy what is left of summer. Soon the leaves will start changing colors and we will be wearing socks and real shoes and hoodies.
