There are various types of insurance available in our world that one my purchase if they are willing to pay the price. The types of coverage that one may purchase include health insurance, life insurance, homeowners’ insurance, liability insurance, flood insurance, theft insurance, fire insurance and many others. Some people purchase as much insurance as possible in life to protect themselves from life’s eventual tragedies. While it is important to protect ourselves in this present world, it is even more important to protect ourselves from the eternal tragedies that can befall man. Sadly, most people in the world live their lives giving little to no thought of their eternal destinies.
Of all the possessions that we have and insure against loss, it is sad that people give so little thought to protecting themselves against eternal loss. In the parable of the “Rich Man,” in Luke, the rich man had made provisions for life but for eternity; God said of this man, “… Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:20-21 KJV)? The comparison is easily made between the rich man in Luke, and men today that provide treasures through insurance for earthly possession but not for their souls. That this world will one day come to an end is evident, therefore we need to be prepared for that day and ensure that we will be protected from the tragedy that awaits all those who do not make provisions against sin.
In a sense, there is an “Eternal Life” insurance policy that is provided for all men. The policy has been paid in full for anyone who desires to have the policy. To acquire the policy and the protection that it provides, the Bible teaches that one must be in Christ. So, I ask this simple, but most important question. Are we covered by the policy (the plan) that God offers?
King David said, “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile” (Psalms 32:1-2 KJV). In his letter to the church located in Rome, Paul quotes David in Romans 4:7-8. While under the law of Christ, Paul shows how important it was to have a way for our sins to be covered. To have one’s sins covered as mentioned in Romans, is to have one’s sins hidden from God’s view. This can only be accomplished by being in Christ (Romans 6:3-4; Galatians 3:27). Our acceptance in the eyes of God (our policy of protection), our acquisition of God’s blessings, can only be realized when we find ourselves in Jesus (Ephesians 1:3-14).
Jesus has secured the provisions of this policy by the gift of His blood shed upon the cross of Calvary. God, in His love for man, has made it possible, and Peter speaks of this type of love. In 1 Peter 4:8, Peter reveals that this type of love covers a multitude of sins. While Peter was speaking of our love for one another, the same is certainly true concerning the love of God for mankind (John 3:16-21). Jesus in His sacrifice offers salvation for anyone who will accept the terms that God has laid before us in the Word.
While life insurance in this world can pay dividends to help our families when our lives have come to an end, God’s “Eternal Life” insurance will pay dividends in the life that is beyond this realm. It will reward us in the eternal life. We should all thank God that He has covered us in the eternal realm. We should all take advantage of the policy/plan that God has provided through His Son. Have you done that? If not, why not do so today? You can do so by hearing God’s word, repenting of your sins, confessing his Holy name, being baptized into Christ, and living a Christian life.
