ETSU women’s tennis earns ITA All-Academic Team honors

Five Bucs named ITA Scholar-Athletes
TEMPE, Ariz. – On Monday, July 11, the ETSU women’s tennis team earned ITA All-Academic honors, while five Buccaneers were named ITA Scholar-Athletes, as the organization announced its academic awards on Monday.
The Bucs generated a team grade point average of 3.60 in 2021-22, while Laylo Bakhodirova (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), Maria Emilia Alfaro (Azul, Argentina), Maria Fernanda Carvajal (Queretaro, Mexico), Yunuen Elizarraras (Cuernavaca, Mexico) and Mayya Gorbunova (Moscow, Russia) were named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
Alfaro and Elizarraras both posted perfect 4.0 GPAs during the 2021-22 academic year, while Gorbunova registered a 3.91 mark, Bakhodirova had a 3.77 and Carvajal added a 3.68 GPA.
“I am very happy that our team is performing in the classroom,” said head coach Ricky Rojas, who was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year. “They are students first and I am super proud on how seriously they take their academics.”
During the spring semester, the women’s tennis team totaled a 3.782 GPA, which was the highest mark among all ETSU athletic teams.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- Have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year
- Be listed on the institutional eligibility form
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- Have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- All student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year
