A Roan Mountain man reportedly took $50,000 from his bank account to buy land in South Carolina only to have someone reportedly break in and steal the money.

James Enkema of 163 Clarktown Road in Roan Mountain reported the theft to Carter County Sheriff Sgt. Justin Burchfield after Burchfield responded to the call at 11:24 p.m. on June 3.

In his report, Burchfield said Enkema withdrew $50,000 cash from his bank account on June 3 to buy some land in South Carolina on June 4 to build a house.

Enkema arrived home at approximately 5:30 p.m. with the cash in a blue Eastman Credit Union money bag and that bag was inside of a brown paper bag which he placed on his kitchen table.

Burchfield said Enkema stated he ate and eventually went to lay down for the night. Enkema said he heard a noise and he got out of the bed to see what the noise was.

Enkema stated he looked out of his front door and witnessed a vehicle with its lights on across the street from his property. He stated that the vehicle left going down Clarktown Road in the direction of Tiger Creek Road. A description of the vehicle or who was inside of the vehicle could not be provided.

It was at that time that Enkema noticed the Eastman Credit Union bag with the $50,000 cash inside was missing from inside the paper bag.

Enkema stated he had locked all of the doors to his residence before he had laid down and stated he did not know who might have taken the money but said they could have only got into the residence with a key.

There were no signs of forced entry on any of the doors to the residence and no cameras were present at Enkema’s residence.
