A Friday afternoon single-vehicle crash at 5795 Highway 19-E in Hampton claimed the life of the driver.
Carter County Coroner Benny Colbaugh confirmed the death and said identification of the victim is withheld pending notification of the family.
The man was driving a black Honda Civic and apparently crossed lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway and hitting a tree before landing on its side at about 4 p.m. Friday.
Zac Benfield was among the first on the scene. Benfield said he saw the vehicle first at the Gap Creek intersection, swerving from the highway to the median. Benfield said he attempted to get close enough to get the tag number to contact the police when the driver swerved again, crossing both lanes of traffic and going over the embankment before striking the tree.
Emergency responders including the Carter County Sheriff’s Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Hampton Volunteer Fire Department, and Carter County EMS responded to the scene.
This is a developing story as more information will be released when it becomes available from the THP.
