WATAUGA — An unidentified driver of a dump truck escaped serious injuries after his vehicle flipped as it attempted to move past an 18-wheeler, which had stopped in the roadway after the two vehicles sideswiped.
The accident happened at 1288 Piney Flats Road on Tuesday afternoon.
According to first responders, the dump truck driver told them the two vehicles had sideswiped and when he contacted his boss, his boss asked him to see if he could work his way past the 18-wheeler.
As he was doing so, the dump truck came too close to the edge of the pavement and the weight of sand in the truck caused the vehicle to flip down the side of an embankment and dump its load.
The driver had to be assisted out of the vehicle by rescue personnel and was later transported to an area hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The 18-wheeler was operated by R&M Trucking LLC of Mechanicsville, Va. The female driver sustained no injuries in the accident.
Traffic in both directions was at a standstill while a local wrecker service attempted to get the dump truck back on its wheels.
