Most people have at one time or another applied for a JOB; they did so because the need to sustain themselves required that they work. Among many other things, one of the first things a new employee receives is a job description. The supervisor or training personnel may tell the new employee about the owners of the company, and the managers at the workplace. The supervisor also explains the opportunities he or she can have as an employee. They are then told about any and all benefits they receive as they are given the job description. The employer informs the new worker he must complete all the job requirements. Without the job description, the new employee will have a difficult time understanding their work responsibilities and the role they are to play in the company.
In a similar way, when people become Christians, God gives the new worker a job description. The Word of God lists the job description and all other needed information. Christians must recognize for whom they work, as well as why they are working. Without a good knowledge of our job description and the work parameters, it becomes impossible to fulfill our job requirements properly. We must remember that Christians work for God as members of the largest workforce ever known, the church. The writer of Deuteronomy said, “Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD He is GOD in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else (Deut. 4:39).” Paul teaches us in Ephesians 1:22-23 and Colossians 1:23 that Jesus Christ is the head of the church. In essence, Jesus controls all things that pertain to our work as Christians. Jesus is the foundation upon which all work is to be done and those that listen are wise men (Matthew 7:24-27). The apostle Paul teaches that the church is built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and that Jesus Christ himself is the chief corner stone (Ephesians 2:20). Jesus also has full authority over the church. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth (Matthew 28:18).” God tells Christians for whom they work, it is none other than Jesus.
Jesus, the head of the church, tells us, his voluntary employees, what we are to do. It is our obligation to teach the lost about God and salvation through Jesus. If we do our work, God guarantees us job security and future opportunities and rewards. We know that there is work for all because Jesus said, “..the harvest is truly plenteous… (Matthew 9:37).” The question we must ask ourselves is; how we will do our work.
In the physical world, we have no guarantee of future work, but in God’s spiritual world, fields are white unto harvest. We have no guarantee that the secular company for which we work will succeed and be available for business in the future. There is no guarantee that our employer will treat us fairly and without discrimination. Christians, however, work for the most loving, caring, and gracious employer that one could ever want. Our God wants only what is best for us. If we follow God’s instructions in our daily lives, our earthly experiences will be happier and healthier, and He guarantees us job security. We must all do our part in His work, with sincerity and faithfulness, following our job description found in the New Testament.
