Students from throughout the Elizabethton City School system are using their artistic skills to raise funds for the Isaiah 117 House.
A total of 41 pieces created by students from Harold McCormick Elementary, West Side Elementary, East Side Elementary, T.A. Dugger Junior High, and Elizabethton High Schools were on display for an art show at the Elizabethton-Carter County Chamber of Commerce. This year, the artwork was available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting Isaiah 117 House.
“Thirty-seven of those pieces sold at the reception and I only have a ballpark figure right now, but there was around $1,500 raised,” said Elizabethton High School art teacher Lisa Malone. “It was overwhelming, even more than I expected.”
Malone said about 100 people attended the reception, including 30 of the students whose work was on display.
“Deb Gouge, EHS Chorale director, told me yesterday that it was exploding on social media with people posting things,” Malone said. “The Director of Schools, Richard VanHuss, is already wanting to have another one next year.”
Malone said she plans to continue to benefit a local charity in the future. “Isaiah House wanted to have a copy of one of the prints to display at the house and it was actually the one that Mr. VanHuss had bought,” Malone said. “The student was more than gracious to donate the piece to Isaiah House.”
