Croy sworn in as EPD Captain becoming third-generation police captain

Matthew Croy became a third-generation police captain on Tuesday.
Croy was sworn in by Elizabethton City Finance Director Preston Cobb.
“I have been trying to become Captain for a while and I finally got it so I am very happy,” said Croy. “My grandfather was a Captain with the Elizabethton Police Department; my dad, Rocky, was a Captain for the Carter County Sheriff’s Department; and now I am a Captain for the Elizabethton Police Department.”
Croy is a 17-year veteran of the EPD and has served as a sergeant for the past four years in the department’s patrol division.
“It’s more pressure the higher you go,” Croy said, adding that he has worked with the officers on his new shift. “They know what to expect from me and I know what to expect from them.”
Prior to being a sergeant, Croy served five years as the training officer for the department, as the accreditation manager and supervised the department’s School Resource Officer program.
He served as a corporal in the patrol division for one year and was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as an investigator for two years after serving as a patrol officer upon his initial employment with the department in 2007.
Croy is one of the department’s Field Training Officers and has served on the department’s Special Response Team. He began his career in 2005 as a corrections officer, transport officer, and bailiff for the Carter County Sheriff’s Department.
The Captain was presented his stripes by his son, Rocky Croy Jr., and daughter, Kim Swearingen. He was also joined by his family and officers Croy served with prior to his promotion.
