Trenton Taylor had one goal in mind since stepping on the football field as a youngster and that was to play for the Cyclones and then go on to the collegiate level.
He finished four years of playing with the Cyclones earning two state championship rings and a state runner-up under his belt and now he will take his talents to Murfreesboro where he will suit up as a member of the Middle Tennessee State University football program.
Taylor also had a stellar career on the wrestling mats.
“When you start the game and continue to play throughout your life, this is obviously one of the goals and to just sit here is almost surreal,” Taylor said. “MTSU has already been at the top of my list – it’s my dream school. I want to go into aviation and they have one of the top aviation schools in the nation so its really a great opportunity for me.”
He said that the coaching staff will be looking at him playing on the offensive side of the football.
“It’s an exciting time as a coach and sometimes as a coach you get nervous about getting up here and talking about this guys who have invested, not sacrificed, but invested their entire growing up years,” said Cyclone head coach Shawn Witten. “He was a force to be reckoned with. He took a beating many times taking on double teams his entire career – unblockable, causing chaos, disrupting, relentless as they come. Each season you could see how Trenton improved his play.”
Taylor had 89 tackles his senior year, 79 tackles his junior season, 73 tackles his sophomore season – over 275 total tackles in his career. He had 14 career sacks, was a two-time All-State player, and was selected to play in the East-West All-Star game.
Defensive line coach Jordy Harrison described Taylor with three C’s.
“Commitment – he dedicated himself to being the best football player he could be,” Harrison said. “Coachable – everything that I every criticized him on, he took it and ran with it and sometimes coached me up. The most coachable football players I have ever had and maybe one of the best football players that I have ever had.
“And he was the ultimate Cyclone. He bled orange and black every since he was walking around here with the big, thick glasses. He was one of the best ones that has ever came through here. I speak for all the coaches here when I say we love you and care about you and will be here for you.”
