ETSU football announces hiring of Grimes and Horn… Coach Quarles fills coaching vacancies with pair of hires

JOHNSON CITY – Ahead of the first spring football practice this afternoon, ETSU Head Football Coach George Quarles announced the hiring of Chris Grimes and Joe Horn to the Buccaneer staff.
Grimes, a former coach at ETSU, comes back to Johnson City to coach the defensive backs. Meanwhile, Horn will take over as the new wide receivers coach for ETSU.
“I am excited about bringing both Coach Grimes and Coach Horn onto the staff here at ETSU,” stated Coach Quarles. “Coach Grimes has been here before when the program began and has only grown stronger as a coach from his time at Gardner-Webb and Tennessee Tech. I feel that he will be a great asset to our defensive staff.
“Coach Horn is another young talented coach that brings tremendous success as a wide receivers coach from various levels of college football. From his playing days at Ashland to last season at Colgate, Coach Horn brings with him a lot of knowledge about the game and how to get the most out of his receivers.”
Grimes makes his journey back to Johnson City to lead the defensive backs unit following a two-year stint at his alma mater, Tennessee Tech. Grimes previously served as the nickels coach at Tennessee Tech in addition to acting as the special teams coordinator and running backs coach.
Before his stop in Cookeville, Tenn., Grimes was on staff at Gardner-Webb from 2016-19, including serving as the defensive coordinator for the Runnin’ Bulldogs in his final two years in Boiling Springs, N.C. Grimes coached at ETSU in 2015, the Bucs first season back from a 12-year hiatus.
Grimes broke through in the coaching realm with Tennessee Tech from 2010-14 as a defensive assistant. Grimes played for the Golden Eagles from 2003-2007, playing in 39 games with 16 career starts.
Horn arrives to Johnson City from Colgate where he served as the wide receivers coach for one season. Under Horn’s guidance, Garrett Oakey led the Raiders in receptions (35), receiving yards (601) and receiving touchdowns (3).
Prior to his stop at Colgate, Horn coached for four seasons at Tiffin where he coached quarterbacks, wide receivers and served as both the pass game coordinator and recruiting coordinator.
Horn enjoyed great success at Tiffin, including in 2019 when the Dragons captured the program’s first GMAC title as a Division II member. Horn began coaching at Ashland where he coached receivers for two seasons and posted an undefeated 2015 regular season, winning the GLIAC Championship.
Horn, a 2010 Ashland Graduate, had a dominant career at Ashland where he is the program’s career leader in touchdown receptions (28), receiving yards (2,681) and holds the single-season record for receiving touchdowns (12) and the single-game mark of touchdowns with six.
