Falcons even score with Cyclones

After winning their game against Volunteer on Monday, the Elizabethton Cyclones traveled to Church Hill on Tuesday looking for the regular-season sweep of the Falcons in Upper Lakes Conference play.
Despite outhitting the Falcons 9-3, the Cyclones couldn’t out-distance Volunteer on the scoreboard as the home team took a 7-5 win to earn the split.
After Volunteer took the lead in the first inning 2-0, Elizabethton responded by scoring two of the own to even the score at 2-2.
Ethan Meier and Zak Workman were hit by a pitch on consecutive plate appearances. With one out, Hayden Nave roped a run-scoring double as Workman took third on the base knock.
A balk by the Volunteer pitcher plated Workman to even the score.
Volunteer scored two in their half of the second inning to retake the lead, 4-2.
The Cyclones drew within one in the top of the third. Brilee Hurley singled to lead off the frame and was caught running when Peyton Johnson followed with another single.
Elizabethton took advantage of three consecutive hit batters – Gage Treadway, Meier, and Workman to score Johnson from third base to make it a 4-3 game.
After holding the Falcons to a three up and three down in the bottom of the third, the Cyclones pulled even in their top half of the fourth.
Jack Farris led off the inning with a single and stole second base. Farris advanced to third on a flyout by Kaleb Hambrick. On a 2-2 count, the Falcon catcher couldn’t come up with a pitch and the passed ball allowed Farris to race home to deadlock the game at 4-4.
The Falcons took advantage of three errors in the bottom of the inning to score three rules to gain distance from the Cyclones leading 7-4.
Elizabethton scored their final run in the top of the seventh with two outs.
Meier and Wesley Shankles squeezed walks between a strikeout by Workman to put runners at first and second. After a Nave strikeout, Farris came through with a single to plate Meier before the Falcons managed to put the final out on the scoreboard.
Johnson led the Cyclones at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance while Farris added a 2-for-4 effort.
The Cyclones made an uncharacteristic six errors in the field that opened the door for the Falcons.
