Cyclones continue hot streak with win over Morristown West

The Elizabethton Cyclones look to continue a strong early first week of the season on Thursday night at Northeast Community Credit Union Ball Park when they played host to the Morristown West in a game originally scheduled for Saturday but played early to beat the weekend weather.
Building a five-run lead after the first two innings, the Cyclones relied on the strong start from pitcher Peyton Johnson and relief pitching of Ethan Meier and Zac Workman to take the contest, 6-3.
After a one-two-three top of the first, the Cyclones made the first dents on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning as Johnson led off with a single and scampered to third on a mishandled bunt off the bat of Brilee Hurley to place Cyclones at first and third with no outs.
Gage Treadway wasted little time in plating Johnson with a stinging double as Hurley held up at third with the Cyclones leading 1-0. The Trojans managed to entice Zak Workman into a sacrifice fly plating Hurley to make it a 2-0 game.
After a Jack Farris strikeout for the second out of the inning, Ethan Meier singled to score Treadway making it 3-0 at the end of the first.
Johnson worked out of a tough top of the second inning as he walked the first two batters before getting the next three outs to keep the Trojans off the board.
The Cyclones got back to work in the top of the second inning as Kaleb Hambrick reached on a two-base error to get the frame started. Johnson collected his second base knock of the contest to score Hambrick making it 4-0 Cyclones.
Johnson worked his way home after a passed ball allowed him to come in from third base as it was now a 5-0 game.
The Cyclones tacked on a solo run in the bottom of the fifth. Workman singled and worked to third base on two passed balls by the Morristown West catcher.
Farris brought Workman to the dish with a single to make it 6-0 Cyclones.
The Trojans put the Cyclones on nervous mode in the top of the sixth inning as they cut the lead in half with a three-spot. However, the Cyclones settled to get out of the mess and hold on to the win.
Johnson finished with a 3-for-4 plate performance with a run batted in for the Cyclones. He also picked up the win on the mound going 5.1 innings of no-hit baseball but walked six. He also recorded 10 strikeouts.
