Senior pitcher Sadie Shoun had her good stuff on Monday afternoon giving up just three hits while striking out six and the Lady Rangers rapped out 15 hits in a 19-0 victory over Hampton.
Shortstop Alana Parsons had a pair of doubles and a walk in going 2-for-4 in the contest.
“Alana has some pop,” said interim manager Aaron Dugger who stepped in for Kenneth Chambers for this one. “If she squares one up she hits it a long way. This group will make you look good. This is a great group of kids with a lot of talent and I hope they go a long way this year.”
Shoun surrendered a lead-off bunt single to Abby Willis in the top of the first but reached back and struck out Ryleigh Nickles and retired Madison Setlock on an infield fly ball that saw Parsons double up Willis who strayed a bit too far from first base.
In the Unaka half of the frame, Shoun was plunked by Briley Davis and one out later Hailey Gilman reached on a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Catcher Kendall Bare then delivered an RBI two-bagger and Parsons followed that with an RBI double of her own for a 3-0 Rangers lead.
The inning was not yet through however as Mattie Salyer walked and Jill Faust crushed a two-run single. In all Unaka (1-0) struck for six first-inning runs.
Shoun went back to work in the top of the second with Lady Bulldogs third baseman Rachel Fair opening the inning with a wind-blown double that eluded Rangers centerfielder Kylie Blevins.
Shoun then struck out Macy Henry and Mackenzie Thompson and Bare threw out Fair attempting to steal second to end the frame.
Unaka plated five more runs in the second with Gilman leading off with a second bunt single and one out later Salyer doubled her home and a Faust triple plated two more base runners.
Faust finished with three hits on the day and the Rangers now held an 11-0 advantage.
Fair came on in relief of Davis to open the third inning but she was sabotaged by a pair of infield errors on the soft Unaka infield as Unaka plated three more runs with Trinity Bowers driving in a run with a base knock.
Once again Willis opened an inning for Hampton with a base hit but Bare erased her with a throw that caught her attempting to steal second once again. That would be the last hit surrendered by Shoun as she mowed down the final five Bulldog batters.
“I was mainly going outside every pitch,” Shoun said. “Kendall calls a great game. I have thrown to her for four years and she knows what works for me. If it doesn’t work she knows how to adjust and I really appreciate her.
“It was a team effort and even without Coach Chambers here we have a good enough group to play good ball and have fun, and it makes it easier on a pitcher when you have good hitters and score runs.”
Hampton had another pair of miscues in the fourth that helped Unaka score five more runs with Bowers getting an RBI single and Kendall Barton came off the bench and contributed an RBI hit.
