The Hampton Lady Bulldogs had something to prove in the 1-A region quarterfinal on the road at Cosby after allowing Unaka to stage a late-game comeback in the District 1-A consolation game.
And prove they did as Coach Brandon Carpenter’s Lady Bulldogs took down the top-seeded Lady Eagles from Region 2 in a 55-38 final to advance to Monday’s semifinals at Walters State against Cloudland with a 7:30 p.m. tip slated.
Hampton jumped out in the first half to seize a 22-17 advantage at the break behind six points from Breanna Davis. Madi McClain and Taylor Berry each contributed with five points apiece in the half. Macy Henry added four and Piper Helle two points in the first 16 minutes of play.
Shylee Shelton had nine of the Lady Eagles 17 points in the half.
The Lady Bulldogs extended their edge by three points in the third quarter as they would lead 39-29 heading into the final eight minutes of action.
Berry lead the Lady ‘Dog pack with eight points in the period while getting contributions from Linsey Jenkins and Helle who canned four points each in the quarter. Henry hit 1-of-2 from the charity stripe.
With eight minutes standing between them and a semifinal appearance, the Lady Bulldogs did what they needed to do to pull off the win.
Helle, Henry, and Jenkins netted four points apiece to ensure Hampton would survive and move on to another game.
Berry had a team-high 15 points in the contest while Helle reached double figures with 10 points.
Shelton had a game-high 20 points for Cosby to lead all scorers in the loss. Gracie Johnson added nine points.
