The Lady Cyclones have had a taste like a sour persimmon since losing a close contest in Kingsport earlier in the season against the Dobyns-Bennett Lady Indians and nothing was going to get that taste out unless they could atone for the loss on their home court.
In another close contest, the Lady Cyclones managed to get a gush of spearmint as they held off the Lady Indians for a thrilling 43-42 win thanks to Lina Lyon being able to outrun the D-B defense for the last nine seconds of the game.
The first half was everything a fan could want in a prep game as the two teams battled for the first 16 minutes with the Lady Cyclones edging out to a very slim 24-22 advantage at the intermission.
Lina Lyon put the Lady Cyclones on her back by scoring 13 of the 24 points recorded by Elizabethton in the half. Katie Lee chipped in with four points while Maddie Fowler added a trey.
Olivia Holly and Marlee Mathena closed out the first-half scoring with a field goal each.
Caroline Hill knocked down a pair of treys for the Lady Indians and finished with eight in the first half while Peyton Moore and Hannah Frye contributed with six points apiece.
The third period proved to be the turning point in the game as the Lady Cyclones came out and outscored the visitors 12-2 in the quarter to push their lead to 36-24 heading into the final period – a lead that would require every point to pull out the win.
Holly, Lyon, Renna Lane, Mathena, Reiley Whitson, and Lee all scored two points each in the period to help build the lead.
The Lady Indians turned it on in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Lady Cyclones 18-7 to put the fans on the edge of their seats as Elizabethton held the one-point lead with under 10 seconds left to play.
When in doubt, put the ball in the hands of Lyon as the Lady Cyclone guard is geared two gears higher than anyone else and managed to bring the ball the length of the court and elude Lady Indians who were trying to foul her but couldn’t get a hand on her as she managed to run the clock to triple zeros to end the game.
Lyon led the Lady Cyclones with 17 points in the contest while Mathena and Lee finished with six points.
Hill also finished with 17 points to pace the Lady Indians. Frye added 12.
