Winter storm warning issued for area

The National Weather Service from Morristown has issued a winter storm warning for Elizabethton and Carter County that remains in effect until 7 a.m. Monday g.
At 4:54 a.m. on Sunday, the service said heavy snow can be expected with sleet possible at times. A total snow accumulation of two to five inches is possible with higher amounts of five to eight inches possible across the highest elevations. Winds also can be gusting as high as 35 miles per hour.
Carter County Highway Superintendent Roger Colbaugh said as of noon, the Roan Mountain community had received about four inches of snow.
“We have 18 guys out right now checking the roads and right now in the Roan Mountain community the roads are only slushy as we are getting a little rain and snow mix,” Colbaugh said. “We are trying to get as much of that cleared off as possible before the heavier snow arrives later.
“When I left Elizabethton, the sun was shining and they didn’t have anything. We haven’t gotten to the top of the Roan yet but I would say they have had all snow. I haven’t heard anything from the head of Stoney Creek, but there might also be some snow there.”
Colbaugh said the main thing right now is for his crew to remain safe while keeping the roads as passable as possible.
The weather service said that impacts from the snow and ice event would be slippery road conditions which are expected to affect the morning commute on Monday morning.
Also, the service advises that if one must travel to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency.
