Gracyn Carder, a junior at Happy Valley High School, earned a perfect score on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery earlier this year.
“We took the ASVAB earlier this year and all of the juniors were required to take it, and when we got our scores back I had gotten a 99 out of 99 which I have been told is very hard to achieve,” Carder said. “The funny thing is that the only reason I took the test is because we had to take it. Before taking the test, I did not have much interest in joining the military, but after taking the test it has piqued my interest.”
Carder admits her score has attracted interest from recruiters. “I have had more people talk to me about potentially doing something in the military. For that reason I have thought about something like the Air Force more often than I did before.”
While the ASVAB is normally a test used to gauge potential members of the military, Carder said she is proud of the results.
“I am very proud of myself for being able to do something like this. Even though this test was something that everyone had to take, doing well is something that helps me excel personally in my schoolwork as well because it pushes me to do as well as I know I can.”
Carder said she is undecided about a career or college choice.
