KINGSPORT – Anytime a team goes on the road to J. Fred Johnson Stadium in Kingsport and comes out with a win on the gridiron it makes the ride back home that much sweeter considering the storied history of games played on the Dobyns-Bennett Indian home field.
The Elizabethton Cyclone JV got an opportunity to relish that feeling Monday night as they traveled to Kingsport and when all was said and done, they boarded the bus back to Elizabethton High School with a 36-13 win.
Unlike their other games, the Cyclones actually got off to a solid start against the Indians taking a 16-0 lead at the end of the first quarter behind a Gib Maupin to Jeremiah Norris scoring strike and a Zeth Mullins rushing touchdown plus the two point-afters by Caleb Campbell. The Cyclones also added a safety.
The two teams’ defense rose to the occasion during the second quarter as neither offense could punch it into the end zone during the second 10 minutes of play.
Coming out of the break, the Cyclones added to their total when Maupin took it across the goal line from five yards out to push the EHS advantage to 23-0 after Campbell’s PAT with 4:18 showing on the third-quarter clock.
A heads-up defensive play by Landry Buckles quickly pushed the lead to 29-0 when Buckles stepped in front of a Dobyns Bennett pass and rumbled 50 yards for a score. Campbell’s boot was blocked and the Cyclones led 29-0.
The quarter came to an end with the same score as time was running out on the Indians to rally.
Dobyns-Bennett managed to finally break the ice when they scored with 6:18 left in the game on a passing touchdown.
Maupin took the Cyclones back down the field on the ensuing possession as the Cyclone signal-caller crashed in on a 15-yard scramble to account for the Cyclones’ final points after Campbell’s kick.
The Indians tacked another score on the board with 2:38 as a mere formality as the game ended in favor of ‘Betsy, 36-13.
“I want to give a shout out to the defensive coaches – Coach Michael Grindstaff, Coach Devon Whitehead, Coach Matt Campbell, and Coach Jacob Woodby because they had the defense ready to play and they forced four turnovers – two interceptions, one a pick-six, and two fumble recoveries,” said Cyclone JV head coach Brian Jenkins.
“It’s great to see these kids come over here and compete from start to finish. We jumped on them early and never let off the gas. We had a few mistakes but we were able to recover from them and bounce back. It’s good to see them finish a game.”
