Big plays were the order of the day for the Cyclones in their junior varsity clash with Daniel Boone on Monday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium. Sophomore Gib Maupin passed for 134 yards on 13-for-16 completions and a pair of touchdowns as EHS walloped Boone 41-12.
“A total team effort,” Cyclones JV head coach Brian Jenkins said. “The guys came to play today and the offensive and defensive lines both set the tempo. The defensive line bent but never broke. They had a few long drives but we bowed our backs and stopped them when we had to.”
Kaleb Holzer rushed nine times for 49 yards and two scores and the Cyclones running back by committee rushed for 158 yards with Bryson Rowland rushing for 34 yards on four carries and Zeth Mullins 48 yards on four tries.
Maupin was on fire in the passing game connecting on his first three passes – 20 yards to Jeriah Griffin, 13 yards to Rowland, and 19 more to Teddy Orton – before his first incompletion.
“When Gib is clicking he’s good,” Jenkins said. “He made several big throws, big runs for us and I couldn’t be more proud of the way he played today. We had Holzer and Zeth carrying the ball and we need to have them ready for Friday night.”
EHS (2-2 overall) took its initial drive 38 yards on three plays after a fine punt return from Griffin with Holzer lugging the pigskin in from five yards out.
Caleb Campbell kicked the point after for a 7-0 EHS lead. The Cyclones defense forced another Boone punt and capitalized once again with a five-play 58-yard drive that Maupin capped off with a five-yard run for a 14-0 advantage.
Campbell was good on five of six PAT tries for the Cyclones.
EHS took the 14 point lead into the break having stymied a 19-play, 84-yard drive that began at the Boone 14 and ended at the Cyclones two-yard line.
In the third period, EHS scored three touchdowns to take a 35-0 lead.
Eli Blevins scored on a 30-yard pass play from Maupin for a 21-0 lead and Holzer scored on a 10-yard run and Alex Riddle caught a three-yard scoring pass.
Boone finally broke through in the fourth period with quarterback Cooper Stevenson scoring on a four-yard run. His pass for two was incomplete and the Trailblazers had to settle for a 35-6 score.
Maddox Tressler scored from 10 yards out for EHS but Campbell’s PAT kick went wide. Stevenson scored on a 10-yard run late in the contest but the two-point run was stuffed.
Kayden Barner led the Blazers in rushing with 82 yards.
