Roberta Lee Jackson Carter, 86, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, September 4, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born April 2, 1935 in Elizabethton to the late Fred and Mattie Lee Marshall Jackson.
Roberta was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She retired from the Raytheon Corporation. She was a member of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, former Elizabethton Fire Chief Billy J. Carter, who passed away November 19, 2014.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Tina and Buddy Collins, Elizabethton; her granddaughter, Kortney (Chris) Vanover, Pound, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Lexi Vanover; and her sisters, Louise Shields and Katherine Perry, both of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 7, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Nick Colbaugh and Mr. Scott Fisher, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by Ray Don Markland. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 8, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be David Shields, Randy Shields, Tim Shields, Chris Shields, Dennis Perry, Chuck Perry and Dustin Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be the church families of New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church and Borderview Christian Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Everyone is requested to wear a mask. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
