The Peters Hollow Egg Fight has been canceled for the second straight year because of COVID-19.
The egg fight is an Easter tradition in Carter County and has been for 196 years. Folks usually meet after church on Easter Sunday at the home of Norman Peters to fight eggs. Last year was the first time ever in modern-day history that the Easter event had been canceled.
Norman Peters, one of the organizers of the event, said Thursday that the event would be canceled again this year because of COVID-19. Peters said social distancing is a problem because contestants have to be close to each other to tap eggs. He also noted that many of the contestants and the people who attend are older members of the community and there was a concern about putting them at risk.
Peters said with the vaccinations there is hope that the egg fight will return next year. “It is something we look forward to. It’s a tradition that we want to continue,” said Peters.
Peters said the decision to cancel was not easy but felt it was necessary.
The Peters Hollow Egg Fight is a long-standing tradition in Carter County, which began when the men of Peters Hollow challenged the men of neighboring Rome Hollow to a friendly egg fight to see whose hens laid eggs with the hardest shells. Thus, a tradition began which has spanned two centuries.
