The Bible teaches us that as Christians, we need always be able to hear the voice of God. If I could describe to you the voice of God, I would start off by saying for me, it is not an audible voice; it is simply experienced by reading and studying the word of God. The Bible states in John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Spending time reading and studying your Bible is key to hearing the voice of God! Your prayer life is also essential to hearing the Lord. When God speaks to our hearts, we must make sure they are open to receive what he has to say. God’s way of talking to his people is key in having an intimate relationship with him.
Going back to the Old Testament, the Bible tells us God commanded Moses to create two silver trumpets to capture the attention of the Israelites as they made their way to the Promise Land. The Bible states in Numbers 10:2 “Make thee two trumpets of silver; of a whole piece shalt thou make them: that thou mayest use them for the calling of the assembly, and for the journeying of the camps.” God gave clear instructions to Moses to equip him with the tools to be a leader of his people. As we look briefly into the meaning behind these two trumpets, first we look at the materials. Silver represents the redeeming power of God or purification. This material was very much sought after and valuable. God commanded Moses to create two trumpets out of solid blocks of silver. This would make each trumpet pure and cause the trumpets to have a distinctive sound. Keep in mind that only priests could blow these trumpets, unlike the ram’s horn or what we call the “Shofar,” that anyone could use.
The trumpets were essential tools for the journey. Without them, it would be very difficult to assemble the nation and march towards the Promised Land. As God gave the instructions to use these trumpets, the Israelites had to listen carefully to how they were blown. If both trumpets were blown together, the whole camp would assemble. If one trumpet was blown, only the higher officials were to assemble together. Numbers 10:9 states “And if ye go to war in your land against the enemy that oppresseth you, then ye shall blow an alarm with the trumpets; and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from your enemies.” As you can see, there were many ways these trumpets could be sounded, but God’s people had to be listening carefully.
Needless to say, these trumpets had a sound that was recognizable. God has a way of communing with us that is recognizable as well! So my question to you today is, can you hear the voice of the lord? John 10:27 says, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” God has a way to talk to us in a way that we can hear him and know that it is him talking. We are his sheep and the sheep know the voice of the shepherd.
I truly believe God intends for everyone to understand that the message of the cross is a clear message that he loves you! We as Christians should strive to make this message as clear as God intends it so we can let this world see who God really is. The sounds of these two silver trumpets captured the attention of all that heard them. One day, we will hear the final trumpet.
1 Corinthians 15:52 says, “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.”
Are you ready to hear this final trumpet? If not, I pray you will allow Jesus into your heart and have a relationship with him. I encourage you today to listen carefully to the voice of God. Allow his truth to open your heart so you can share the good news of the cross.
