The Hampton Bulldogs raced to a 21-7 first-quarter advantage and held on to that lead despite a 31 point effort from Jellico guard Jordan King. The ‘Dogs took an 87-55 region 1A quarterfinal on Saturday at Van Huss-White gymnasium to advance against Cosby on Tuesday night.
“We had 28 assists tonight, so we really moved the ball well,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We had great chemistry, moved the ball well, and played tough defense. We haven’t faced Cosby this year, but we know they have a good team and we will have to play our best to win.”
Forward Morgan Lyons scored a team-high 16 points for Hampton who had five players score double figures with Michael Harrison adding 13, Logan Whitehead added 12, and Parker Henry and Conor Burleson each scoring 10.
King had a tough first half scoring just seven points but came alive in the second half scoring 24 second-half points for the Blue Devils, but it wasn’t nearly enough.
The ‘Dogs (19-7) took a 40-20 halftime advantage and added to that lead in the third period.
Hampton took a 61-34 lead into the final stanza and coach Smith got to empty his bench in the fourth period.
For Jellico, Carson Bolton and Isaac McNeely each had five points.
“Our press defense was the difference tonight I thought,” Smith said. “The guys played really well and we know that Cosby has good post players and guards that can really shoot the ball well. We will have to bring our best defensive effort.”
