For fans of high-scoring basketball games, Hampton High School was the place to be as the Hampton Bulldogs and Chuckey Doak Black Knights put on a dazzling performance with the ‘Dogs managing to outduel the Black Knights to take a 81-70 victory in the last regular-season contest of the 2020-2021 season.
The first half was the difference in the contest as Hampton blasted out of the gates to establish a 47-24 lead after 16 minutes of play.
Conor Burleson was unstoppable as the solidly-built post tallied 12 points in the opening half to pace Coach Ned Smith’s ‘Dog team. Morgan Lyons also had a hot hand as the junior connected for 10 points and senior guard Garrett Vines added a dandy first quarter by scoring seven in the opening stanza.
Tyler Ramsey was doing his best for Chuckey Doak to help keep his team in the game as he attributed for nine of the 24 points in the half for the Black Knights.
Kameron Yost chipped in with eight in the half for the Black Knights.
The second half was almost a flip of the first half as it was the Black Knights that seemed to find the shooting stroke with 46 points in the final half but Hampton was doing enough to protect the big first-half advantage they built by scoring 34 down the stretch to take the victory.
Lyons and Burleson led the ‘Dogs on the evening with 17 points each. Vines finished with nine points in the win while Michael Harrison totaled eight for Hampton.
Hampton had 15 offensive boards and 25 defensive rebounds for a total of 40 in the contest.
Logan Whitehead cleaned the board for 12 rebounds and had three steals in the contest while Burleson nabbed double figures in rebounds with 10 to record a double-double for the contest.
Ramsey led the boys from Greene County by firing in a game-high 24 points in the defeat. Yost came out strong in the second half to close out the contest with 19 points.
