Bulldogs, Devils split contests in Tuesday matchup

UNICOI COUNTY – With basketball season a couple of weeks underway now, things are ramping up on the hardwood for area schools.
The Hampton Bulldogs being one of these schools, traveled to Erwin Tuesday evening to take on the Blue Devils of Unicoi County High School.
As always, it was the girls’ squads that would get things started, with the boy’s teams following suit.
The Lady Blue Devils would come out of the gate striking first, going on an 11-1 run to start the contest, bringing the score to 13-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The second period saw more of the same from the Lady Blue Devils as they continued to stretch their lead, going into the break with a 28-10 advantage over the Lady Bulldogs.
Quarter number three brought with it the same things we had seen in the first half, and while the Lady Bulldogs would try to mount a comeback, Unicoi County carried a large 40-18 lead into the fourth.
The final quarter of play was no different, as the Lady Blue Devils would go on to win the first contest by a final score of 48-27.
Despite the loss, a few Lady Bulldogs put up impressive point totals. Madison McClain finished the night with 11 points while Destini Milhorn put up 10 points.
After a short break, the boy’s contest was underway and while Unicoi County took the lead to start, the Bulldogs didn’t falter as they took a lead of their own.
Riding on a 13-4 run towards the end of the first quarter, the Bulldogs would head into the second leading by a score of 23-13.
The second stanza showcased more of the same upbeat tempo, with the Bulldogs going into the locker rooms with a 37-24 lead over the Blue Devils halfway through the affair.
While the Blue Devils seemed to be making a comeback in the third quarter, the Bulldogs were able to widen the advantage once again heading into the final quarter, 49-33.
In the end, the Bulldogs were able to hold on to their lead from the first three quarters, defeating Unicoi County by a score of 66-53
In the victory for Hampton, Conor Jones led the team with 16 points, followed by Michael Harrison with 12 and Nate Wilson who put up 11.
