GRAY – Exploding out of the gate in the second period behind 12 points from guard Andrea Flores the T.A. Dugger Lady Junior Cyclones turned a six-point game into a 53-32 victory on Tuesday night.
The Cyclones (1-0) connected on six three-pointers and ran up a 46-21 lead after three quarters and used a running clock in the final period. Ridgeview (1-1) made up some of the deficit late when guard Ella Head was good on her last three-point shots.
TAD forced 17 first-half turnovers which head coach Matt Fox was pleased with saying, “Defense definitely led us. I think we played really aggressive and set the tone early with the turnovers and on offense, I am really tickled with the girls. Offensively I think we made really good decisions. We still have to improve on a lot of things but I think that the shots we took were good decisions.”
The Cyclones led 13-6 after one quarter was in the books, but the defense began forcing turnover after turnover, and TAD capitalized on a good many of them, scoring 21-second period points to open a 34-14 halftime advantage.
In the third period, Michelle Shields began finding the range as she scored 10 of TAD’s 12 third period points as the Cyclones opened a huge lead that forced a running clock in the fourth period.
That’s when Head took over the scoring load for the Raptors by connecting on three consecutive treys to finish with a team-high 13 points.
Flores led all scorers with 18 points followed by Shields with 14 and Katelyn Nave with eight.
“Defense is what is going to set the tone for us this year,” Fox said. “Especially in our conference. We have to keep the turnover battle on our side and not turn it over ourselves. Turnover margin will definitely be a deciding factor in a lot of our games.”

Playing with a full running clock the entire way made it difficult to put up many points but the JV Raptors got the better of it by outrebounding the JV Cyclones 22-14.
Skylar Hall – the smallest player on the court – paced everyone with eight first-quarter points on four-for-five shooting as Ridgeview led early 8-4.
The Raptors held an 8-6 halftime lead despite not scoring a point in the second quarter. Things picked up for Ridgeview in the third period as Ella Wilson had six of the Raptors eight third period points and Ridgeview took a 16-8 lead into the final stanza.
Five players each scored two points for TAD – Kylee May, Reagan May, Sadie Williams, Abby Gwinn, and Jasy Shell. Hall led all scorers with eight for Ridgeview while Wilson finished with six.
