On Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium, the T.A. Dugger Lady Junior Cyclones battled, scrapped, and did everything you would expect except for one thing.
They didn’t score. Neither did their opponent Chuckey-Doak Middle School.
For 60 minutes the two teams battled but when the final whistle blew the teams had to live with a 0-0 tie in girls’ soccer action.
“We got touches, a lot of them,” Lady Cyclones head coach Eddie Morrell said. “We just could not find goals. I mean what can you say, we stuck to the game plan and I felt like we were creating scoring opportunities but we missed on opportunity after opportunity.
“We were down Izzy (Isabella Lewis) but we can’t use that as an excuse.”
The Cyclones (3-3-2 overall) had six first-half shots – none of them very dangerous – and the Lady Knights goalkeeper Kylee Askew was up to the task of stopping each of them.
The TAD defenders – with Maddix Morton in the middle – kept the Knights at bay.
Several times Morton blasted crossing passes deep into CDMS territory, finding Cyclone players in dangerous positions but time after time the Knights defenders were able to play the ball away or the Cyclones put up a weak shot.
“We should have been shooting the ball a step sooner,” Morrell said. “Too many times we led ourselves too far and weren’t able to put a good shot on goal. For a traditional soccer fan, a 0-0 draw is common.”
TAD’s best chance at a goal came in the first half when Rylee May broke free and split two CDMS defenders but her low blast was stopped with no rebound as Askew sprawled to the turf.
In the second half, CDMS began to force the attack into Cyclone territory and had a few dangerous opportunities with Tavyn Southerland’s direct kick from 20 yards out being handled by TAD goalkeeper Amelia Proffitt.
Abby Hoxie had a golden opportunity turned away by Proffitt as well when she fired a bullet at goal that was handled and the rebound cleared.
TAD returns to action on Thursday against Bluff City.
There will be a JV match at 5:30 with the varsity action beginning at 6:30 pm.
