John Treadway Gymnasium played host to the 2A District 1 volleyball tournament on Monday as the Lady Cyclones of Elizabethton welcomed in the Lady Blue Devils of Unicoi County. Despite jumping out to an early two-set lead, the Lady Blue Devils would storm back and pull off the reverse sweep.
The first set was a back and forth chess match early with the teams trading points until Brittany Kitchens took over the serve and lead Elizabethton to five straight points.
The Cyclones lead would grow and a comeback effort was quickly thwarted by Mattie Davis who was the MVP of not only the set but the whole match. The Cyclones would close out the first set 25-22.
Set number two was much of the same for the Cyclones. Davis completely dominated the opening few points before the Blue Devils would come roaring back.
Several back and forth lead changes flipped the momentum almost constantly until an emphatic pair of spikes from Kitchens and Davis pushed the Cyclones ahead.
Another Unicoi County comeback was attempted, but it also failed as EHS took the set 25-21.
Looking to close out the match in the third set, the Lady Cyclones once again pushed out to a rapid lead that was quickly eviscerated by the Blue Devils.
This time, however, was not like the others as Unicoi would be the team to pull ahead and not look back.
Despite several good shots from Cheyenne Poiroux and the rest of the Cyclones, the Blue Devils dominated the set winning 25-18.
Trying to bounce back in the fourth set, Elizabethton tried to not let the lead become insurmountable like it had in the previous set.
An awesome spike from Kallista DePrimo looked to stir the life into the Cyclones, but at just about the same point as the last set, Unicoi began to pull away.
A few good efforts from ‘Betsy saw a couple of points retaken, but they were their own worst enemy in the set and took the loss 25-16.
Heading into the do or die set, John Treadway gym was raucous and the teams could feel it.
The last set was like a heavyweight boxing match with each team throwing a haymaker of its own. Just as Elizabethton sat one point away from victory, four consecutive points from the Blue Devils put the final nail in the coffin on the Cyclones season.
A terrific effort from both teams, this one will not feel good for ‘Betsy. Still a fantastic final showing for both seniors Brittany Kitchens and Kallista DePrimo who both played exceptionally well in the match.
