AFTON- An eager Elizabethton Lady Cyclones soccer team traveled to Greene County on Monday looking to even their record at 5-5.
Ready and waiting for them was an equally energized Chuckey Doak Lady Black Knights team.
A back and forth game throughout, the Cyclones gave it their all in the last 10 minutes giving them the 2-1 victory.
The game started with a lot of momentum on the side of the Black Knights. In the first 15 minutes, Elizabethton (5-5 overall) couldn’t seem to get into the game.
The game got more under control for the Cyclones behind some excellent play from senior Tessa Lamb who controlled play down the wing throughout the first half and the two teams began trading the ball through midfield.
The breakthrough for EHS came in the 24th minute when Mollie Johnson who had struck the bar a few minutes earlier, didn’t make the same mistake twice and slotted in a goal in the bottom left for the 1-nil lead over the Black Knights.
Aside from a couple of light-hearted efforts, Chuckey Doak hardly threatened the Elizabethton goal in the first half.
A late onslaught from the Cyclones at the end of the half-pressed the Black Knights to the brink, but they were able to hold out for the halftime whistle.
Coming out of the break, the Cyclones once again seemed to struggle with finding a grip in the game.
In the 47th minute, EHS conceded a free kick in their own half. The Black Knights took it quickly and a very unfortunate ricochet saw an on goal from the Cyclones and leveled the score at one apiece.
After more back and forth from the two teams, Chuckey Doak really began putting pressure on the EHS goal, but Morgan Heaton rose to the occasion with an incredible double save in the 72nd minute keeping the two teams level.
A couple of minutes later saw some heroic defending from Siana Robey, who stopped a Black Knight counter-attack.
At the 77 minute mark, the Cyclones put pressure on the Chuckey Doak goal and won a late corner. Maddie O’Quinn whipped it into Mollie Johnson who held off the defenders and hit it back to O’Quinn who ripped a curled effort past the goalkeeper for the game-winning goal.
A huge win for the Lady Cyclones puts their current win streak to three games and gives them tons of momentum for their big conference showdown with Greeneville.
