HAPPY VALLEY – After a rough two weeks for the Happy Valley Warriors, it was time for redemption Friday night on Warrior Hill as they would take on the Cosby Eagles.
After receiving the ball first, the Eagles were no match for the HV defense as a four and out would give the Warriors excellent field position to start the game.
And it was evident that the Warriors had a chip on their shoulder this evening as their high-powered offense was on full display from the get-go.
On the first play from scrimmage for the home team, running back Andrew Little would bust it to the outside from thirty-six yards out to give Happy Valley an early 6-0 lead over the visitors.
While it seemed that the Cosby offense would come back with their own score, the Warrior defense would yet again halt the Eagles at midfield.
The next drive for the Warriors included a bit of an air attack as they marched down the field.
But it would be Gabe Nickles rushing through the middle from one yard away, followed by a two-point conversion to cap off the drive and give Happy Valley a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.
After yet another turnover on downs for the Eagles, the Warriors would take over in the red zone ready to strike again.
It would be Landon Babb’s turn this time as he would take it in from a yard out to increase the Warrior lead, 20-0.
It was the same result for the Eagles on their next drive as a punt from inside the five gave the home team the ball inside the red zone yet again.
The rushing game from the Warriors would take off as it was Matthew Bahn taking it in from nine yards, followed by a two-point conversion pass from Eli Ayers to Babb to give Happy Valley a 28-0 lead halfway through the second quarter.
And with a minute left in the half, the Warriors struck again as Ayers would find Little on a twenty-eight-yard pass followed by another two-point conversion, giving Happy Valley a 36-0 shutout lead going into the half.
To start the second half, it was more of the same. With a running clock, the Warriors would add on a total of thirteen points with a pitch and catch from Ayers to Alex Lunceford as well as a rushing score from Pedro Colunga to seal the deal with an impressive 49-0 win over the Eagles.
Warriors head coach Jason Jarrett spoke on his team’s defensive performance saying, “The goal coming in was to put a goose egg on the board. We hadn’t been able to do that this year so it was good to see our guys come out and set the tone and hold them to zero points.”
Another big part of the Warriors’ success, the ground game, was also mentioned by Jarrett.
“We wanted to get multiple people the ball, and the credit goes to our guys upfront because they dominated in the trenches. The guys in the backfield just fed off of that and found a hole to run through so it was a great job by them as well.”
