Relay for Life of Carter County paints the town purple

A splash of purple was added last week by the Relay for Life of Carter County.
Prior to the Relay for Life event last weekend, downtown partook in Painting the Town Purple 2020.
Sherie Rowe, the owner of Betsy Treasures, explained that this was her first year as a lead chair for the event. She said the goal was to garner more attention for the event.
“We wanted to really try to focus on getting the town more involved in Relay for Life again, especially after the last few years where participation had really fallen off,” she said. “So we thought that would be a good way to participate.”
Rowe said the response was wonderful.

Rita Russell, the owner of Simple Blessings, described how cancer impacted her family.
“We felt it was important to support and painting the town purple was a great way to show our support. My Dad passed away from pancreatic cancer 27 years ago so supporting the Relay for Life honors his memory and the many others affected by this horrible disease,” she said.Like Russell, Misty Counts, owner of Duck Crossing Elizabethton, was happy to participate.
“It was great to rally together with my downtown neighbors for a common goal,” she said. ”We’ve all been affected by cancer in one way or another and this gave us a chance to show our support.”
After incorporating purple, Relay for Life kicked off last weekend. During the event, due to COVID-19 and social distancing, a cancer survivor parade in cars was held as well as a Luminaria display at the Covered Bridge Park and around the block.
While this year was different from those in the past, Rowe said she believes this was a success. She also stressed that donating to this cause is very important, as it helps fund cancer research.
The event itself may have ended, but donations for 2020 will be underway until Oct. 31. Rowe said Hope Cards, which cost $10 and have discounts to 18 participating restaurants on them, can now be purchased at Betsy Treasures.
