Workout Anytime Fitness hosted their second 9/11 Stair Climb Challenge event last week.
“We invite members of the community, both our gym members and people in the community, as well as our first responders, to come and climb 110 flights on our stairs in honor of the 110 flights of stairs first responders climbed on 9/11 in the Twin Towers,” explained Seth Terry, manager.
Terry explained that doing this challenge is a way to honor those first responders from that fateful day.
“We want to show that we honor our first responders and we are very thankful for them, so we want to show our respect to them,” he said. “Doing the stair climb challenge is one way that we can do that.”
Participants this year could sign up in advance for time slots. They were given one designated hour per person, per stair climb. Most finished in half of the designated time. Breaks are also allowed during this time as well.
Terry explained that this is both a physical and mental challenge.
This year brought around two dozen participants to the gym to participate in the challenge, with one firefighter in full gear and one EMT among them.
“They were tired but they were very grateful that a place was offering the opportunity for them to show their support,” he explained. “They were all extremely tired from doing it, but it was a good physical and mental challenge.”
Among participants, there is no prerequisite for a level of physical fitness you must be in. Terry said participants of all fitness levels participated in the challenge.
On Sept. 11 each year this event is offered as an official challenge for people to sign up, however Terry noted that people have come in saying they have heard of this in the past and want to set a personal goal to do this.
“They can do that at any time they want to,” Terry explained. “We will train them and help them do that.”
Terry said the event will be happening again next year to honor 9/11.
