Sullivan Central who lost to Elizabethton 2-0 on August 19 turned the tables on the Lady Cyclones on Tuesday evening at Citizens Bank Stadium with a 5-nil shutout in girls’ soccer action.
The Cyclones (2-3, 1-1 conference) couldn’t muster a consistent attack against Central goalkeeper Jaelyn West with just three shots on goal. The Lady Cougars fired 13 shots at EHS sophomore keeper Morgan Heaton who made several outstanding saves.
“What we lack in skill we make up for in effort,” said Lady Cougars head coach Emily Robinette. “We didn’t play well in the first game against them, I’ll just say that. We have played the last four games with great intensity and that’s what got us through.”
The Cyclones had an outstanding opportunity in the opening minutes of the match when freshman Mollie Johnson was fouled in the penalty area giving EHS a penalty kick. Junior Maddie O’Quinn fired a midlevel shot to West’s right and she anticipated well and made the save to keep the match scoreless.
“We talked about that a little bit,” Lady Cyclones head coach Bill McClay said. “Sometimes missing on a penalty kick affects a team as much as giving up a goal. Up to that point, we had actually gotten the ball in some dangerous spots. I thought the pass that Kaiya (Simmons) made diagonally to Mollie before she was fouled was a great ball. I don’t think we defended the corner kicks very well. The first goal we didn’t have enough players in the box defending.”
Central (2-3, 2-1 conference) got on the scoreboard in the 12th minute when senior Rylie Patrick sent a corner kick into the box from where junior Jessie Lange banged it home for a 1-nil Cougars lead.
The Cougars struck again in the 20th minute when senior Kylie Harrison fired a ball across Heaton’s face and as she turned to move to her left she fell and Jamye Crawford had a wide-open goal to shoot at and she didn’t miss.
Crawford’s goal made it 2-nil and Central carried that advantage into the second half. One minute into the second half Emma Niebruegge (Nee-bree-gee) passed a ball ahead to Patrick who was now one-on-one with Heaton and her shot beat the Cyclone keeper to her right on a low shot for a 3-nil Central advantage.
Patrick struck again in the 48th minute to make it a 4-nil contest and the Cougars got the final tally as the clock struck zero when sophomore Loren Hensley took advantage of a defensive letdown and scored when Patrick passed the ball out of a corner kick set piece to her.
