Another tough task… Highlanders take to the road for meeting with Cosby

After a tough battle to open the season on the road at Happy Valley last week, the Cloudland Highlanders didn’t know if they would be playing this week or not after Avery County being a North Carolina school has canceled football to at least the spring.
It wasn’t until Sunday evening that the Highlanders knew they were definitely going to have an opponent as they were able to secure a game with the Cosby Eagles howbeit on the road once again.
Cloudland head coach Scott Potter was proud of how his undermanned Highlanders played against a larger Happy Valley team even in a 34-18 defeat last Saturday night and expects the same this week when facing the Eagles.
Potter realizes that his team might take some bumps early on against a stacked early-season schedule but feels that if the Highlanders can make it to the region portion of their schedule they will be just fine.
Happy Valley head coach Jason Jarrett reflected the same opinion last week after seeing his team have to rely on a five-touchdown performance from Matthew Bahn to fend off the scrappy ‘Landers who were playing with 15 players who could play after suffering two injuries in the previous week to two starters to an already short-handed team.
That doesn’t stop this bunch of Highlanders who will be looking to take the game to the Eagles led by quarterback Chase Shell and running back Seth Birchfield.
Shell, the brother of last year’s starting quarterback Hunter Shell, had a nice first game under center scoring one of the ‘Lander scores on a 22-yard bootleg.
Meanwhile, Birchfield bruised and battered the Warrior defenders as the back scored two touchdowns on runs of four and two yards.
Potter went on to say that what his team does day in and day out is just evidence of the pride that the boys that put on the blue and gold have each and every time they take the field.
The second-year head coach also believes that the confidence his team gained in their meeting with Happy Valley was just what the doctor ordered as they might have entered that game with little hope of winning but after looking back realize they can play against anyone and have success if they can eliminate the mistakes and execute better.
The game in Cosby has a 7:30 pm kickoff.
